Band Training for Punching Strength

Wednesday, November 11th, 2009

band-3blog

Have you every seen a Boxer that was good and fat.  Ok maybe a few heavy weights but when you get into any weight classes below that, these guys are ripped through the trunk.

Is it any wonder, when you look at how functional the art of punching occurs.

From a neuromuscular standpoint, punching uses the concept of reciprocal training to enhance punching power.  Simply stated, your body uses pulling to enhance pushing.  See our body often use the opposite side of the body moving the opposite way to enhance movement on the other side of the body.

This happens with running all the time.

As a result a few years ago I started to do band reciprocal training to enhance my arm action with sprinting.  This training helped but what  I got as bonues benefits were a great  reactive trunk workout and a alternative way to maximize my heart rate without running.

Seeing and trying is a must when it comes to reciprocal training.    Here are a few tips to doing effective reciprocal push – pull training.

1. Don’t always emphasize number of reps. Instead see how fast you can push each individual rep by reloading on each rep. You will see how I do this. Interestingly, I think quality reps burn even more calories than if you just try to knock out a lot of reps.

2. Also don’t keep your feet the same. Change it up on every round. Your trunk and hips will hate you but your back will love you. By the way if you are into hitting the heavy bag. Do this workout first and then go hit the bag. Look out because you may bring it down.

3. Make sure you stay athletic and let the system load. As I always say, learn to load and you are guaranteed to explode with incredible punching power.

4. No low back pain. This means you are not loading and instead are trying to muscle with your upper body. Your punch starts from the floor and must go through your hips…. Use them.

I hope you enjoy this weeks RBT Live 43 Episode and as always please leave thoughts and comments below.

Multi-Resistance Band Super Set-Up

Sunday, June 28th, 2009

When I was in my meat-head training 20′s and 30′s we did something call super sets.  Essentially this was where you blasted an isolated muscle group until you couldn’t lift the resistance anymore, than you immediately dropped the weight and kept on going.

Than when you couldn’t lift that weight, you dropped again and blasted it again.

Can you say over training!!!

Well obviously I know longer do that but the concept of  changing resistances fast for different exercise was something that did make some sense.   Especially when your not the same strength for lower and upper body exercise which is often the case in my resistance band boot camp.

With this set up camper can easily change resistances if needed and if you want to push it you can do that as well.

Here is how you can do a quick multi band workout without any attachments.

If your wondering what strength of bands you need,  my recommendation is you look at the  Medium or Large single band package.  I don’t usually recommend single bands but I know that for some they want to find out what the resistances are like before they order a lot more bands.

No problem.  That is why I created the single band packages.  So check it out and try my Multi resistance band workout set up.  Its a real blaster

Choosing the right resistance bands

Friday, June 12th, 2009

The number 1 email I get every week is which resistance bands do I choose or purchase to get started with in my bootcamp.

100_2552

Here are 5 questions to answer.

1. What are your group demographics?? Age – gender are key to getting the right resistance bands to train with.

2. What aspect of resistance band training do you want to start to implement?? (Flexibility, running, lower torso strengthening, upper torso strengthening) Best is to choose the exercises you want to use.

3. What are you going to attach your resistance bands to or are you going to do band partner or free attachment training?? Free attachment training or Partner training will take a bit to teach but will require half as many bands. Independent stations will take more to bands and obviously a stable attachment site.

4. Are you going to go exclusively band training or use other devices?? My suggestion is make it part of the camp at first and gradually build in more aspects of band training.

5. What surface are you going to be training on?? Grass, asphalt, gym floor…
Surface will dictate what drills are best and most safe.

My suggestion is you take some time to write down your answers to these questions and than if you want, email me at support@resistancebandtraining.com and I will customize a resistance band package for you.

Also if you have not tried our bands yet, pick up a total fitness package and get training. Ths package comes with a downloaded ebook that will get you started.

“To Get Something YOU Never Had you have to do

something You Never Did!!

Today I start at my New Fitness Band Boot Camp location with hopefully many of my present boot camp members and a few new faces as well.

How does this relate to the above saying??

I was originally running my boot camp out of a fitness center which made sense when I first started.

Over the past 2 years if became obvious that having the camp at a neutral site that I could call my own allowed me the freedom I needed to manage the camp and create a “True fitness community”

So today I get something a never had by doing something I should have done a long time ago and I can not wait to make it happen.

Now I ask you??

If resistance band training is unmatched as a training tool, do you think it could help your clients, your  Fitness Boot Camp business or your personal workouts.

“To Get Something YOU Never Had you have to do something

You Never Did!!

www.resistancebandtraining.com is a great place to start and I am hear to help just like I helped Marisa

HI Dave

Just wanted to tell you that I am VERY impressed with all the work that you have done and continue to do!!  I am ectastic about having my Total Fitness Package and RBT Manual.  I have started using the training methods and exercises in my own workouts and soon will get them implemented for my patients and clients.

Your bands aer certainly of the highest quality and teh e-books are comprehensive and concise with excellent photos.

Im am also very happy that you are producing the short RBT Live Videos and sharing them online:  a wonderful supplement to the printed material.

I wanted to thank you for all you have given..

Stay well

Marisa

So what are you waiting for.  What is something you Never Did that you are going to do today?

Do Your Bands Do this??

Do YOUR bands do this??

100_0298

Why does this happen??

Layered bands are thin individual layers of latex continually wrapped around and layered until the desire thickness is created.   It is than cut and glued down.    The problem is this glue does not always adhere well especially on smaller bands where surface area is less.

Also smaller bands typically get stretched more which challenges the band structurally and can lead to peeling.

Can this be eliminated??

That is exactly what I asked over 1 year ago while designing a new band.

The answer ….YES!!

“The BAND” by Performax which is the exclusive band of www.resistancebandtraining.com uses a technique called “latex welding” to adhere that final end back down onto the band.  By welding the end of the final layered back down onto the band it has eliminated peeling.

In the past 7 months that “The BAND” has been on the market I have had zero bands returned for fraying.

Problem Solved!!

If you have issues with fraying no problem…  I have the solution.

Buy all your bands with latex welding which to my knowledge you will only find at

The Band Man is ready to React in 2009

Its amazing what a couple of weeks do for your mental and physical energy levels.

I decided to take the last 2 weeks off to re-energize and just brainstorm.

All the business and training mentors I have have always told me that I needed to do this but often I just kept

working and rolling with what came up.

Guess what??

They were right.

So I started by asking myself this question..

How could I help make all of my fellow RBT’ers better and more excited about Reactive RBT??

Here is what I came up with…

People need to really see what RBT is truly all about.    I have to show not tell them.   As a result I will be launching several exciting new projects and clinics over the next month.

First of all  A new blog will soon be up.    www.askdaveschmitz.com will be  launched which will make finding RBT information much easier regardless if you are a coach, trainer or fitness Enthusiast.

Secondly I will be launching A brand new  RBT Live TV series called…  Reactive RBT LIVE!!

tv

More on this later but trust me this is going to be alot of fun for everyone.

Next, I have established several dates for Reactive RBT Specific Clinics.   The first one  will be a Coaches only “React to the Ball”  Clinic on  Feb. 7th.  I will discuss this more in upcoming blog post but if you are a coach and want to get your athletes faster in weeks not months…  Sign up HERE

Also stay tuned because a  Reactive RBT For Fitness Professionals is ready for  March…  Date just needs to be confirmed.

Lastly.. I have decided to change the theme for 2009 to “Training Beyond the Contraction” instead of “Training to React not Contract”

This truly states exactly why you need Reactive Resistance Band Training into your training format.

So there you have it…

Keep your eyes open and keep checking the email box because I will be visiting it frequently…

Until tomorrow …Remember

Band Training is To Hard for Most

Tuesday, November 4th, 2008
Recently did a High School PE class and whow did I get an
eye opening.

These were HS kids and I was amazed at how they struggled
with doing simple band training.
Their trunk control frankly stunk…..  to much PS3 I suspect

Than I had a new adult group clinic 2 days later and it
was amazing.  Most of these were fitness minded
adults who worked out…… ON MACHNINES!!
Bands blew them away.

Here are 2 reasons why bands are difficult for most
traditional exercise people and for kids that have
poor dynamic trunk control.

1.  Bands make you work through the full motion.
90% of all machine based and body weight based
and free weight based training makes you work
just through mid range.  So you train your
neuromuscular system to back off once you get
through mid range.

2.  Band make you control your entire body and
use your entire body to generate force.

Most people want to isolate and just use
a single body part.  This simply won’t
work with bands

Great for body building… Does not work
when it comes to function and band
training

So the bottomline…

Go ahead and lift with machines, free weight,
and definitely keep doing your body weight training…

…but you need to consider adding bands into the mix
to enhance your total body strength and integration.

Here is a perfect example of how to bring bands into
db training.
